History of flooding

Usually by this time of year,

Water is high in the pines.

This historical calendar and accompanying diagram shows a history of surface water flooding depth in Big Cypress National Preserve.  The chart is color coded by major habitats (center of domes and strands = orange, green =  tall cypress, marl prairies = brown, hydric pines = baby blue, mesic pine islands = purple, and hammocks = black)
Unlike last year when the water line rose quickly into the mesic pine islands (and even one step higher up and into the hardwood hammocks),

This year has been one step below.

Make no mistake: We're still in summer sheet flow mode.

Just not peak water territory yet.

It usually takes some tropical moisture to take that next big step.
