Meteorologic measuring stick

Ever see a storm in the distance and wonder just how far it is?

Me too.

Afternoon storms are scenic from a distance
Turns out this one was a good ten miles away (to the north.) It was sunny where I took the photo but a strong wind was blowing ominously on my back. Two hours later it was down pouring on the spot where I was standing. This time when I looked at the radar my question was reversed:

How far would I have to travel before I got free (and out from under) the storm.

Here's the radar image showing where
I was standing looking north
towards the storm cell
Answer: About ten miles
