Paper hydrologists to the rescue!

Why is it that canals were so easy to build ...

But filling them in is so hard?

That was easy!

The mentality was "dig first and ask questions later."

Decades later the mantra seems hopelessly reversed.

We're better at shuffling paper than moving actual dirt.

No regulations or thoughts given to the process. Just "get rid of the water and we can sell the land". Every time I go over the Broward bridge, I think about how he went out to sell Florida land!

I love looking a the old photographs of Miami River with the rapids intact. That must have been an incredible sight. As for the Miami Canal, not so much.
