Cumulative effects

Water has finally dropped out of the pines.

In total, the hydric pines (orange) were flooded for four months.

Hydroperiod is measured in months per year in the hydric pines
Some years the mesic pines are wet for just a few weeks.

Even the mesic pines (red) went under this year.

That didn't happen the year before.

During our last big wet season of note in 2005 ...

Water rose into the mesic pines for four full months.  That makes that year deeper and for longer than our "flood of record" in 1995.  But of course what set the latter apart was the wet dry season of 1994-1995 that came before.

Sometimes effects are cumulative in the swamp.
