Extraordinary - no limbs until near the summit?

This is one of only a few old growth cypress strands still left in the state.

Bob:

Great picture of the cypress snag. It illustrates how cypress are resilient in the face of even massive damage from hurricanes. The entire top can be lost and resprouts regenerate the crown. This is one reason that it is very difficult to age big, old cypress from cores -- many rings are missing when the tree is slowly regenerating loss of major limbs or entire crowns. Trees like the one you show, looks like about a meter dbh , are probably over 1000 years old. Corkscrew?Dr.Tpm
