Mud and water

Here’s a scenic spot right by the side of the road …
Or in this case – Trail (as in Tamiami).

It’s a foot and a half deeper now,
Than March of last year (2009).

You may ask:
How exactly did I measure
Last year’s water level in that mud?

Turns out I didn’t need to lift a finger,
Or even muddy a boot:

South Florida Water Management District did it for me
In the form of a handy dandy nearby hydrologic monitoring station …

We call them "hydrostations" for short.

As good as it feels to finally be able
to put a "face to a name" …

Putting a "photo to the data" – for a hydrologist – is sort of the same.

This is the highest water level ever recorded in March for the 5 years this station has been in.

BTW, you may have noticed how the two vertical posts serve as nice reference points for the two photos.

Why they are there I'm not sure? - Presumably an old sign post ...

Hi,
I deffinitely agree with the 'photo to the data' feeling :)
I also love your statistics graphs by the way, how do you make them?

I use Grapher™ by Golden Software. Funny you mention it, I'm currently in the process of switching over to the newly upgraded version of it. (Never as straight forward as it seems.) It's an excellent program with great technical support.
