Pine lowlands?

Yes, the cypress look like hills,

Especially during the winter when their branches are bare …

Even if – as anyone can attest whose slogged through the swamp – they are the lowest lying part of the swamp instead.

The last time I flew however – and for the first time – I was struck by the observation that the pine islands served as willing co-conspirators on this most mesmerizing optical illusion of the swamp mosaic.

Nestled in the sea of gray,
the patches of pitch-green pine
looked as low as the cypress are high …

At least from some angles.

It's extraordinary to realise that this mosaic is composed of trees! It looks very beautiful - from the air.

Just returned from cypress land and even though it was cold, I loved the change of scenery!

The swamp from the air and from the ground (or in this case, water) almost resemble two different places at times, although each is beautiful in its own way. It'll all be changing in the upcoming month as the cypress start to green out (and warm up).

It looks like the cypress trees are trying to swallow up the pines. Great pics and lovely prose to accompany them, Mr. S.

That's W2W: It's beautiful country here in Florida as you well know. (I'm in Gainesville as I type -- it's dropped below freezing last night and this.)

It does look like it's lower than the gray of the cypress. Oh, and I love the contrast in that last photo!
