Jelly fish sting

My then very special friend (now wife) arrived at my door in a panic.

“I’ve been bitten by a sting ray!” she exclaimed. “You have to take me to the hospital right now before the poison gets to my heart.”

Soon enough we were there. Not long thereafter we got the news:

“A jelly fish sting.”

Fast forward 10 years later, at the same beach, this time sting rays are lapping up at the shore.

“Probably not a good idea to go swimming,” I thought.

Turns out I was wrong.

Beach patrol gave me the news: “They are just cownose rays, not sting rays, foraging in the shallows. It’s perfectly safe to go swimming.”

And so we did without incident.

A week later, at the same beach, the coast was clear: No rays!

But we got stung anyhow.

You guessed it:

A jelly fish!

Oh My.... I've never been stung by a Jellyfish---but I've heard how horrible it can be....

Guess you two need to stay away from that area... ha

I'm not sure I would have ventured into the water with any ray, stinger or not!
My relatives who live in the Florida panhandle put meat tenderizer on jellyfish stings. Not sure if that's an old wives tale or actually useful.

I ran to the store and purchased a bottle of vinegar. It takes the sting away. I've also heard that warm water works too.

The waves picked up the next day and they were gone ... or at least we didn't see any -- jelly fish or cownose rays.

I don't know a lot about rays but I was surprised to see them in such shallow water. I was stung by a jelly fish when I was a little girl in England, and I still can remember how it hurt!

Your tale reminded me of our time along the East Coast! I didn't know we had rays along our US shores. I thought they were further South in the Caribbean much further South! (Good read! I enjoyed the pics too.)

Similar jelly fish inundate the waters at the shore near Norfolk's entrance to the Chesapeake Bay. We lived there for over 4 years and I only once went swimming because of that!
